Columbos 2009 Marathon Result

Results are in for the 2009 Columbus Marathon. Your 2009 Columbus Marathon results include Matthew Folk and Richard Kessio taking 1 and 2 in the 30th running Sunday. Rachel Kinsmen won for the women, Maureen Beach was second.

In total the race drew 15,000 competitors.

One interesting suggestion by organizers - don’t wear your iPod!

Don’t wear an iPod. I know that I’m a bit of a hypocrite on this one because I love my iPod for training, but there will be 65 bands and tens of thousands of people lining the course on race day. If all that music and all those people yelling out encouragement to you can’t keep you motivated, then nothing will. Trust me, you won’t need the iPod.

Bring your own watch. It will take you a little while to cross the starting line unless you’re up with the elite runners, so your start time will not be 00:00:00 on the official clock. It will be easier for you to track your pace if you start your watch once you hit the start line rather than trying to think through the pace calculations at each mileage marker.

Connecticut cornerback Jasper Howard

Connecticut cornerback Jasper Howard (left) was killed early Sunday morning in an on-campus stabbing.

Tragedy has hit the Connecticut football team.

Jasper Howard, a junior starting cornerback for the Huskies, died Sunday morning after a fatal on-campus stabbing only hours after the team's win over Louisville on Saturday.

According to the Hartford Courant, which first reported the story, Howard was stabbed after a fight broke out shortly after midnight near the campus' student union center. Howard was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. A second person was also stabbed, but was treated and released.

The perpetrator of the stabbing is still at large.

Howard had 11 tackles in the Huskies' 38-25 win over Louisville on Saturday afternoon and also forced and recovered a fumble.

Connecticut is scheduled to play on the road at West Virginia on Saturday, before returning home for the first time on Halloween against Rutgers.

Five Question for Tom Nardone Pumping Carving Pro

Tom Nardone with a creation he calls "The Brain."

Q: So how did you get into professional pumpkin carving?

A: I used to live in Ferndale and we had just a ton of kids come to the house trick-or-treating, so I used to make pumpkins to entertain them. Then I made a Web site about pumpkin carving with power tools and it got popular ... and eventually (I was) asked to write a book.

Q: What should people look for when picking out a pumpkin?

A: Ugly pumpkins. When you carve a pumpkin it's kind of like a caricature, and caricatures are better when they're big, so try to get one that's as big or bigger than a human head. I also go for ones that are tall rather than wide.

Q: How long should people expect their creations to last?

A: I spray it with bathroom cleaner with bleach it in and that will keep it as long as possible. That should keep it lasting about five to seven days when it's cool. Otherwise you get about three days before they start to get moldy or soft.

Q: What tools do you recommend people have?

A: Those pumpkin carvings kits they sell at the store are pretty good. An ice cream scoop is good to scoop the goop out. I tell people to stay away from the big kitchen knives for carving. I use the jigsaw to do the face, and I use a Dremel to shave the skin off, and to take the top off the pumpkin I use a drywall saw, or I use a reciprocating saw.

Q: Any tips for amateur jack-o-lantern makers?

A: Before you carve the pumpkin sometimes it's nice to draw the face on with markers. One thing I've discovered that works well is dry-erase markers because then if you don't like a design ... you can just wipe it off. I also have free patterns available at the Web site.
