Nintendo 3DS

According to people who make way more money than the rest of us, the future of entertainment will be presented in glorious 3D. I'm not sure consumers are entirely onboard with this yet, but apparently it's just a matter of time until we're all spilling the guacamole bowl because we refuse to take off our dorky glasses during Super Bowl L.
All of us, that is, except the folks at Nintendo.
The longtime handheld video game king releases its heavily-anticipated 3DS system on March 27, ending a wild year's worth of rumors, speculation, and hyperbolic praise. Boasting glasses-free 3D technology, it's the company's answer to the serious threat posed by Apple's various iOS devices, and a pre-emptive strike against old rival Sony and their Next Generation Portable due out later this year.
But more importantly, is it any good? Absolutely -- but not necessarily for the reason you think. Read on for some answers to what are likely your most pressing 3DS questions.

How much is it?
The system costs $250, though some retailers (like Target and Walmart) are offering trade-ins for older DS models to knock that price down a bit. Inside the box you'll get the unit itself, a stylus for the touchscreen, an AC adapter, a charging cradle, a set of 'AR' cards and a hefty instruction manual.
Order a 3DS from Amazon.com

How's the hardware?
Though its overall clamshell design and dual screens give it a similar look and feel to earlier DS systems, the 3DS is a notably sleeker, more elegant handheld. Even the stylus has been reworked, now sporting a chrome finish and a telescoping design to accommodate larger hands.
In addition to the familiar touchscreen, D-pad, face buttons and shoulder bumpers, the 3DS comes equipped with a new analog stick (dubbed the 'Circle Pad') as well as an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The pad is comfy and less tense than the analog nub on the PSP, though a second analog stick would have been nice for any upcoming first-person shooters (GoldenEye, please?) But consider your control bases well-covered.
The 3DS is also backwards compatible, so you'll be able to play all your old DS games on the system as well, though not in 3D.

So does the 3D really work?

Pilotwings Resort
Nintendo For the most part, yes. But it's going to work a little bit differently for everyone.
A 3D depth slider on the right side of the top screen lets users tweak the intensity of the effect to their liking; most folks around these parts prefer it at just around the halfway point, but it really boils down to the game. Pilotwings Resort, for instance, can be something of an eye strain when cranked to the higher 3D setting, while the less action-packed launch title Nintendogs + Cats offers milder 3D in general.
Get things just right, however, and the visuals lend an amazing sense of depth to the image. It's a bit like watching a diorama come to life, and you've absolutely never seen anything quite like it before in a handheld game machine. It's interesting, innovative, and unmistakably Nintendo.
But it's not without some flaws. The higher 3D settings significantly impact the viewing angle; tilt the device just a few degrees left or right and you'll lose the 3D effect -- and possibly gain a headache. Don't expect to show this off by having people watch over your shoulder. To really 'get' the 3D, you have to play the 3DS for yourself, preferably without moving around much.
And you'll probably want to be over the age of 7 to have that experience, as Nintendo warns against letting children 6 and under use the 3D tech for fear of vision damage. To that point, turning the slider off yields the same standard 2D look as other game devices, and the 3DS comes equipped with parental controls that lets users disable the 3D effect entirely.

How are the games?

Considering what Wii Sports did for the Wii, it's a real shame that the 3DS doesn't ship with a full game tailored to show off the new tech. And while the launch list might be long, it's not exactly brimming with blockbusters.
Super Street Fighter IV is the current must-have. Providing every ounce of content as its console-based kin, it's a real showpiece for the under-the-hood advances that make the 3DS a more powerful handheld than previous DS systems. What else is worth a look? Check here.
Of course, launch games typically fall a bit short. Big games are certainly coming: 3DS takes on Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Super Mario and more await gamers in the future.

What else does it do?
Super Street Fighter IV 3D
Capcom When you're not showing off Street Fighter to anyone within earshot, you'll make Miis, take low-res 3D photos (saved to an included 2GB SD card), and partake in a couple quirky timewasters. Face Raiders, which turns photos of any face into a formidable force of flying enemies, is the best of the bunch and more compelling than the gimmicky 'AR' cards.
The 3DS also doubles as a pedometer, tracking each step you take with the device in hand (or pocket). Better still, you'll earn 'play coins' for being active, which can then be spent on various goodies in different games. In the case of Nintendogs, the pedometer lets you take your virtual pet on a real-world walk. It's exactly the sort of clever, playful concept you'd expect from Nintendo.
What you wouldn't expect, however, is the handheld's improved networking features. While it still uses the awkward, 12-digit 'Friend Code' system to hook you up with fellow 3DS owners, it connects smoothly to Wifi hot spots and will even trade game data with nearby 3DS systems while in sleep mode. Nintendo has even announced a partnership that will give 3DS owners free access to over 10,000 AT&T Wifi Hot Spots.
Unfortunately, a few pieces of the puzzle are still MIA. An internet browser is not yet functional, nor is the "eShop" digital games store. Nintendo insists it just wants to make sure it does digital downloads correctly this time around -- it didn't exactly do a crack job with the disappointing DSiWare -- but for those of us who are now accustomed to buying at least a portion of our games digitally, the lack of this option out of the box is a bummer.

What about that dodgy battery?

If the 3DS has a soft underbelly, it's right here.
No doubt about it -- the battery life is woefully short. Fully-charged, expect only a tad over 3 hours of play time. That can be extended a bit by lowering the screen brightness and turning off the Wifi, but that's still only going to squeeze another hour or so out of it. To make matters worse, it also takes a solid 3 hours to fully charge the unit once it's been depleted.
The "good" news? Closing the lid will put the system in a standby state that will hold its current charge for much longer (I closed it mid-game overnight and found the battery level hadn't budged when I re-opened it in the morning), so at least you can conserve its limited life. Nintendo has also made it marginally less of a hassle to charge the 3DS by including a handy charging cradle, but that will offer little consolation to those greeted by the depressing "low power" red light in the middle of a cross-country flight. If you buy a 3DS, make sure to buy a little patience, too.

The Verdict

It comes as no surprise that Nintendo would spend the bulk of its marketing energy promoting the 3D aspect of the 3DS -- it's even baked into the name -- but as it turns out, it's the myriad of other upgrades that will likely wind up giving the system its real depth. From its improved control scheme and online functionality to its quirky set of built-in features, the 3DS has a lot going for it.
The 3D? When it clicks, it's a showstopper, turning the system into the sort of eye-catching, water-cooler gadget that helped make the Wii such a big hit back in the day. Plunging through the air in Pilotwings Resort is somehow made more interesting -- magical, even -- when viewed in 3D. Is it just a gimmick? Cynically, sure, but if memory serves, we said similar things about the Wii remote during the launch of that eventual game-changer.
And as any gamer knows, it's rarely wise to bet against Nintendo. The company has a knack for bucking trends while setting new ones, and we fully expect that to happen again courtesy this quite capable, occasionally captivating device. Worth a buy.

OMG, LOL has added to Oxford English Dictionary

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has included OMG (Oh My God), LOL (Laugh Out Loud) and ♥ (to love) as "real words worthy of etymological recording," reports The Huffington Post.

In a recent statement, the OED said "OMG" and "LOL" are "found outside of electronic contexts... where there often seems to be a bit more than simple abbreviation going on."

They added, "The intention is usually to signal an informal, gossipy mode of expression, and perhaps parody the level of unreflective enthusiasm or overstatement that can sometimes appear in online discourse, while at the same time marking oneself as an 'insider' au fait with the forms of expression associated with the latest technology."

The OED also said that they found their first quotation for OMG from a 1917 personal letter and that LOL dates back to 1960, meaning "little old lady" at the time.

As for ♥, the OED said it may be "the first English usage to develop via the medium of t-shirts and bumper stickers," reports The Huffington Post. It has "gone on to live an existence in more traditional genres of literature as a colloquial synonym for 'to love.'"

Mexican Drug-War

MEXICO CITY – Most of Mexico's largest news media outlets agreed to a set of drug-war reporting guidelines Thursday, promising not to glorify drug traffickers, publish cartel propaganda messages or reveal information that could endanger police operations.
The voluntary, self-policed guidelines are the first of their kind in Mexico, where more than 35,000 people, including at least 22 journalists, have been killed in drug-related violence since the government stepped up its offensive against cartels in late 2006.
"We in the news media should condemn and reject the violence arising from organized crime," the agreement said. It also vowed to "ignore and reject any information coming from criminal groups with the purpose of propaganda."
Mexican drug cartels frequently leave messages or banners next to the bodies of their victims, often with misspelled, obscene threats to authorities or rival gangs, and some media outlets in Mexico already have a policy of not reporting those messages.
But some of the messages have proven newsworthy.
In July 2010, the director of a prison in northern Mexico was charged with allowing inmates allied with the Sinaloa cartel to make forays out of the prison to murder their rivals. Prison officials allegedly even lent the inmates guns and vehicles.
The Zetas gang, a rival of the Sinaloa cartel, first drew attention to the scandal by kidnapping a local police officer and forcing him to describe the scheme on a video posted to a website that specializes in drug underworld information.
While supporters of the accord denied the government had been involved in drawing up the guidelines, President Felipe Calderon's office praised the accord as "a clear example of the responsible way in which the participating media outlets treat criminal organizations and the violence they create."
The accord was signed by officials of Mexico's two dominant TV networks, a number of large radio station chains and several of Mexico's most influential newspaper groups. But some organizations declined to sign on to the list of self-imposed rules, including prominent newspapers such as Reforma and La Jornada.
Reforma issued a statement saying that it "has had its own mechanisms for editorial policy."
Benoit Hervieu, the head of the Americas desk for Paris-based Reporters Without Borders, said his group had been invited to sign, but declined because of concerns about some articles, especially one that reads "When the government takes action within the limits of the law, it should be made clear that the violence is caused by the criminal groups."
"I do not totally agree with that," Hervieu said. "When there are raids, even when they are within the limits of the law, there can still be abuses, even against the news media." Police and soldiers have sometimes shoved, beaten or threatened reporters covering raids.
Another clause says journalists "should avoid (using) the language and terminology used by criminals," and pledges "as news media, we should not publish information that places at risk the viability of actions and raids against organized crime, or place at risk the lives of those who fight it, or their families."
In 2009, assailants gunned down the mother, aunt and siblings of a marine who died during a raid that that killed Arturo Beltran Leyva, the leader of one of Mexico's most powerful cartels. The federal government had released the marine's name, something it no longer does.
Carlos Lauria, senior coordinator of the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, said none of the clauses seem to attack freedom of expression, and said that if some organizations object to some of the guidelines, "if it generates a debate, it seems to me that would be positive."
"We couldn't have a worse situation than the one we have today," Lauria said, referring to the threats, violence and attacks by drug gangs that have led some newspapers in northern Mexico to stop publishing articles on drug gang turf battles.
The accord aims to defend journalists' safety, suggesting possible measures such as omitting bylines on some stories. It also defends the media's right to criticize government anti-crime actions, and questions the police practice of displaying newly arrested suspects, often surrounded by their alleged weapons, before reporters and cameras.
"The authorities sometimes try to show how well they are doing in the fight against organized crime by parading suspects before the media in conditions that violate the presumption of innocence," it said. "We as media should always publish this type of information based on the assumption they are innocent until proven guilty."
News anchor Joaquin Lopez Doriga of the Televisa network denied that the rules amount to self-censorship.
"The organized crime gangs very clearly want to use some of us as their spokesmen," Lopez Doriga said, adding that he had never broadcast a drug cartel message

Qatar Fully Air-Condition Soccer Field

Dr Saud Abdul Ghani, head of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Qatar University, unveiled a design and construction of an artificial cloud to shade and cool the open playgrounds to be used in the 2022 World Cup in Doha. He told a local Arabic daily that the project will be executed in collaboration with Qatar Science and Technology Park.

He said the artificial cloud will move by remote control, made of 100 percent light carbonic materials, fuelled by four solar-powered engines and it will fly high to protect direct and indirect sun rays to control temperatures at the open playgrounds.

He said the initial model of the cloud cost $500,000 but the cost will decrease upon launching the commercial models which could also be used at beaches, car parking by using the mobile phone.
Qatar won the bid to host the 2022 World Cup by promising that its nine new open-air soccer stadiums would be air-conditioned. Now the Qataris have announced another cool twist to their hospitality -- an artificial cloud to hover above the stadium and provide shade.

The head of mechanical and industrial engineering at Qatar University said the cloud would be positioned by remote control and run on solar power.

Based on the design shown in local Qatari news outlets, the cloud isn't white and fluffy. It is flat and rectangular, resembling a giant cell phone, and will be built using light carbonic materials. Perhaps something was lost in translation from Arabic because the invention is more spaceship than cloud, but ultimately players and fans will benefit from the shade.

The cost of the cloud is $500,000, but money is no obstacle for Qatar, which is one of the world's richest countries thanks to vast natural gas and oil reserves.

There have been concerns about the heat ever since Qatar began its campaign in 2009 to pursue a World Cup. The average high for July in Qatar is 106 degrees, and temperatures have reached 120 degrees in the summer. That is one reason why Prince Ali of Jordan suggested shifting the 2022 World Cup from its traditional time in July to January, which is Qatar's coolest month with an average high of 71 degrees.

Temperatures were in the 60s for the 2010 World Cup championship match in Johannesburg, South Africa, held on July 11, between Spain and the Netherlands.

Qatar, which is roughly the size of Connecticut, will be the smallest nation to host a World Cup. The other finalists to host in 2022 were the U.S., Australia, Japan and South Korea.

Facebook Kicks Out Underage

The social networking site kicks off around 20,000 underage users per day, its chief privacy adviser, Mozelle Thompson, told Australia's parliament this week.
He admitted that the site's way of weeding out those who don't meet the 13-and-up age requirement -- essentially a user-entry honor system -- is "not perfect," because there's no mechanism for detecting kids who simply enter a false age.
"There are people who lie. There are people who are under 13," Thompson said.
A recent Pew study found that nearly half of all U.S. 12-year-olds use social networking sites -- and privacy concerns in regard to Facebook's younger members have been growing of late. This month, Sen. Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, wrote to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (pictured) to argue for reforms in the site's privacy measures. "Under Facebook's policy, 13 million users under the age of 18 may be allowed to share their personal information just like adult users," Franken wrote. "These younger users are the most vulnerable to predators on Facebook and the rest of the Internet and it should be impossible for them to inadvertently share their phone numbers and home addresses with anyone."
But Franken's figures don't factor in the unknown number of Facebook users under 13.
Other sites that are popular with kids handle the issue in differing ways. MySpace also requires users to be at least 13, but like Facebook, it has no practical way to verify that information. Disney.com allows children 12 and under to surf the site, and collects some personal information from them before they're eligible to participate in competitions, for example. Yahoo! doesn't allow kids 12 and under to register without the consent of a parent. Like Disney, it collects some limited idenifying information for participation in competitions and similar interactive features.

Japan is the Expensive Natural Disaster in the World

TOKYO – Japan's government said the cost of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeast could reach $309 billion, making it the world's most expensive natural disaster on record.
The extensive damage to housing, roads, utilities and businesses across seven prefectures has resulted in direct losses of between 16 trillion yen ($198 billion) and 25 trillion yen ($309 billion), according to a Cabinet Office estimate Wednesday.
The losses figure is considerably higher than other estimates. The World Bank on Monday said damage might reach $235 billion. Investment bank Goldman Sachs had estimated quake damage would be as much as $200 billion.
If the government's projection proves correct, it would top the losses from Hurricane Katrina. The 2005 megastorm that ravaged New Orleans and the surrounding region cost $125 billion, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Japan's estimate does not include the impact of power shortages triggered by damage to a nuclear power plant, so the overall economic impact could be even higher. It also leaves out potential global repercussions.
"The aftermath of the tragic events in Japan will obviously alter the domestic economy," said Takuji Aida, an economist at UBS Securities Japan, in a report. "However, Japan's position in the global economy is such that there must also be some transmission of the shock to other parts of the world."
The Cabinet Office suggested, however, that the economic hit could be softened by the expected upswing in public works and construction as the region rebuilds.
The 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami on March 11 laid waste to Japan's northeastern coast, killing thousands of people and triggering a crisis at a nuclear power plant. Tens of thousands of people living near the plant were evacuated.
Utilities have imposed power rationing, many factories remain closed and key rail lines are impassable.
Toyota Motor Corp., the world's No. 1 automaker, has halted auto production since March 14 because of difficulty securing components, including rubber parts and electronics. By Sunday its lost production will reach 140,000 cars.
The company said Wednesday it will delay the launch of the Prius hybrid minivan in Japan due to disruptions in parts supplies.
Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco said the automaker initially planned to roll out the Prius minivan in April. But the disaster has crippled suppliers and destroyed shops, forcing Toyota to postpone the launch.
Another Cabinet Office economic report released Wednesday underscored the new challenges facing Japan, which had been on the mend from a lull in growth late last year.
"The economy is moving toward recovery, but its self-sustainability is weak," it said.
More broadly, the Japanese economy has been lackluster for two decades, barely managing to eke out weak growth between slowdowns. It lost its position as world's No. 2 economy to China last year and is saddled with a massive public debt that, at 200 percent of GDP, is the biggest among industrialized nations.
The government plans to introduce a supplementary budget to tackle reconstruction, though Cabinet members have said additional budgets will probably be needed down the road.
Speaking to the upper house budget committee Tuesday, Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said the country's deteriorating public finances will not deter the government from reconstruction spending, according to Kyodo news agency.
Cabinet Office spokesman Noriyuki Shikata expressed confidence that the country could handle the massive task that lies ahead.
"This is not something that the Japanese economy cannot overcome," he told reporters Wednesday.
The government also reportedly plans to inject public money into banks to help support lending as companies rebuild. It may finance that from a fund of 11 trillion yen ($135 billion) that is still available under a law on emergency support to banks passed after the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers.

TOKAY GECKO

The Tokay gecko is the second largest gecko in the world. Tokay Gecko males can reach 12-14" in total length. Female Tokay geckos are slightly smaller averaging 8-10" long.

An adult tokay gecko averages 5-7 ounces in weight, but particularly large males may achieve weights closer to 11.5 ounces. Hatchling tokay geckos start life at 3.5"-4" and reach breeding age in 9-12 months, but it may take up to 2 years for a tokay gecko to reach is full adult size.

Male tokay geckos are a blue-grey body color with spotting that varies in color from redish-orange to whitish-yellow. Females tokays are a grey body color with the same spotting and generally not as brightly colored as the males. Both sexes have the ability to lighten and darken their skin to some degree to help them blend into their surroundings.

The typical current prices for Tokay geckos are as follow
300 grams - 399 grams = RM25,000 - RM35,000
400 grams - 499 grams = RM80,000 - RM120,000
500 grams - 599 grams = RM200,000 - RM400,000
600 grams - 799 grams = RM500,000 - RM700,000
800 grams - 999 grams = RM800,000 - RM980,000
Above 1000 grams approximately RM1 million.

Tokay geckos are in high demand by the traditional medicine industry
abroad as it is believed that the reptile’s tongue can cure AIDS.
Some believe that its meat is also an aphrodisiac while its
blood and bile suppresses tumors in cancer patients.

As buyers are only interested in Tokay geckos weighing 300 grams and above,
those possessing smaller Tokay geckos would rear the reptiles hoping to sell
them once their weight exceeds 300 grams. Although Tokay geckos usually feed
on insects such as crickets, cockroaches and grasshoppers, the Tokay geckos in
captivity are also fed chicken liver to speed up its growth process.

The Tokay gecko (also known as the Gekko gecko) is a nocturnal arboreal gecko
whose native habitat is the rain-forest trees and cliffs. The Tokay gecko is
commonly found in northeast India and Bangladesh, throughout Southeast Asia and
western New Guinea.

The Tokay Gecko is the second largest Gecko species, attaining lengths of
about 30–40 cm (11–15 inches) for males, and 20–30 cm (7–11 inches) for females,
with weights of 150–300g (5–10 oz). They are distinctive in appearance, with a
bluish or grayish body, sporting spots ranging from light yellow to bright red.
The male is more brightly colored than the female. They have large eyes with a
vertical slit pupil. Eyes are brown to greenish brown and can be orange or yellow.
Males are very territorial, and will attack other male Tokays as well
as other Gecko species, as well as anything else in their territory.
They are solitary and only meet during the mating season. Females lay clutches
of one or two hard shelled eggs which are guarded until they hatch.[1]
Tokay Geckos feed on insects and small vertebrates.[2]
The typical lifespan is 7–10 years, however in captivity some Tokays have
been known to live over 18 years.[citation needed]

Mayweather set to fight Pacquiao - in court

Unbeaten US boxer Floyd Mayweather will fight Filipino star Manny Pacquiao after all, although it will be a legal dispute after a federal judge denied a motion to dismiss the case.

Pacquiao filed a defamation lawsuit against Mayweather, among others, that US District Judge Larry Hicks ruled can proceed because there is sufficient evidence of malicious acts in accusing Pacquiao of being a dope cheat.

"The truth did not stop Mayweather and the others," Pacquiao's lawsuit contends. "That is because they are motivated by ill will, spite, malice, revenge and envy."

"Mayweather and the others set out on a course designed to destroy Pacquiao's career, reputation, honor and legacy and jeopardize his ability to earn the highest levels of compensation."

Pacquiao has never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) but in the 2009 lawsuit he claims that Mayweather, his father Floyd Snr and uncle Roger, promoter Oscar de la Hoya and his employee, Richard Schaefer conducted a campaign in a set of interviews to make people think he used them.

"Defendants argue that Pacquiao has failed to sufficiently allege malice because defendants could not have known one way or the other whether Pacquiao had actually taken PEDs when they made the alleged defamatory statements," Hicks wrote in the order upholding the lawsuit.

"However, the court finds that Pacquiao has sufficiently pled malice in the amended complaint."

Unbeaten Mayweather and Pacquiao were in talks to stage a megafight between two of boxing's biggest stars but negotiations collapsed over demands by Mayweather that both fighters have blood and urine tests up to 14 days before the bout.

Pacquiao said he would feel weakened by blood tests within 24 days of the fight and would not agree to tests any closer to a bout.

Mayweather Promotions attorney Mark Tratos said he would continue to push for dismissal of the case, saying comments at the time were made about Pacquiao's hesitancy regarding blood tests and did not claim he was a dope cheat.

Pacquiao attorney Dan Petrocelli said his client's career would suffer major damage if fans believed he used banned substances.

"Manny has an unblemished reputation and has earned all of his achievements through hard work and his natural-born talent and to call him a cheater is something he cannot and will not tolerate," Petrocelli said.

"None of these defendants have had any evidence to back up the assertion that he has taken performance-enhancing drugs because he didn't."

Mayweather, 34, faces an April 25 trial date on a battery charge over an altercation with a security guard for his homeowners association, who claims Mayweather poked him during a November argument regarding cars parking outside Mayweather's home.

Mayweather also faces a court hearing on April 28 on domestic violence charges that could send the fighter to prison for up to 34 years in prison if convicted of all charges, which include felony counts of grand larceny, coercion and robbery.

Mayweather is accused of striking and threatening former girlfriend Josie Harris, stealing her mobile phone and threatening two of their children in an incident on September 9.

Boxing fans have hoped that Mayweather, 41-0 with 25 career knockouts, would fight Pacquiao but Mayweather's legal woes have put such talk on hold.

Pacquiao, 52-3 with two draws and 38 knockouts and a winner of 13 fights in a row in the past six years, is set to face 39-year-old US fighter Shane Mosley, 46-6 with one draw and 39 knockouts, on May 7 in Las Vegas.
