HP Multitouch Computers

HP will be making a splash in the world of multitouch computing by unveiling a trio of HP TouchSmart PCs alongside the company’s very first 42″ high-definition digital signage touch display known as the HP LD4200tm. The new HP TouchSmart PC range will comprise of various screen sizes that range from 20″ to 23″ (that’s not pretty wide, but it ought to be good enough for most desktops) in the form of the HP TouchSmart 300 and HP TouchSmart 600. Both models will come in a sleek, award-winning design which can come with either a stunning HD-capable or HD widescreen display with a multitouch enabled screen.

With a multitouch display, users are able to enjoy an infinitely better experience compared to the iPhone and all of its iterations, where one is able to pinch, rotate, arc, flip, press or drag a finger across the screen of the PC in order to access information, entertainment and social networks in a natural and intuitive way. It would be interesting to see whether multitouch will introduce a whole new generation of computer users from the retired age range though. Apart from that, you can still navigate through standard circumstances that rely on a wireless keyboard and mouse.
You will be able to take advantage of the new swivel stand and tilt webcam that increases the user’s ability to share and collaborate around the HP TouchSmart when engaged in a video call, where you can work without having to worry about polluting the environment thanks to compliance with ENERGY STAR 5.0 requirements. Apart from that, selected models of the HP TouchSmart 600 will connect easily to gaming consoles, including Xbox, PlayStation and Wii, via HDMI or composite video ports. Interested in any of them? The HP TouchSmart 300, HP TouchSmart 600, HP TouchSmart tx2 and HP TouchSmart 9100 will start from $899, $1,049, $799 and $1,299, respectively. Release dates will be different though, from now all the way till December this year depending on the model.

iPod Sliding Speaker

I’m always surprised at how much love the iPod Nano gets in the accessory department. Here’s one for more for those that have a preference for the Nano over the other types of iPods. Of course, don’t worry, this case is also available for the Touch as well. The accessory allows for you to always have a speaker on hand, because the speaker is stashed on the back of the case. It’s probably better suited for someone that prefers portable speakers over headphones a majority of the time

The case will add a bit of bulk to the iPod, but not enough to weigh down your pockets too badly. In order to turn the speaker on and off, all you have to do is slide the speaker out from the back of the case. The crystal hard case is included and you can choose to have a half mirror coated case. It comes with a rechargeable Li Polymer battery, which is recharged through a USB connection. As of now there isn’t a whole lot of availability or pricing information.'

HP jump-starting Compaq brand with ultra-cheap

Remember Compaq? Hewlett-Packard acquired the venerable computer company way back in 2002, but it's kept the name alive as a secondary brand ever since, mainly relegating Compaq to overseas markets (Compaq is particularly popular in Asia) and as second-tier PCs sold on the cheap at warehouse-style stores.

But now HP is looking to breathe a little new life into the Compaq brand, positioning it not just as a label for extremely cheap computer equipment but also as one with mainstream appeal in the U.S.

Today the company is announcing the rollout of a line of ultra-inexpensive PCs, both laptops and desktops, with extreme budgets in mind.

Consider first the Compaq CQ61z (pictured), a 15.6-inch laptop with an AMD Sempron CPU, 2GB of RAM, DVD burner, 160GB hard drive, and discrete graphics. Running Windows 7 Home Premium, the machine costs a nearly unfathomable $399. That price point probably sounds familiar -- it's the usual cost for your average netbook, which in comparison offers a tiny screen, minimal hard drive, and an ultra-low-power Atom CPU.

With the $400 laptop's arrival, Compaq wants potential buyers to ask: Why not jump up to a much larger and more capable system for exactly the same price? I'm having a hard time seeing any reason not to. Seriously, it even has a numeric keypad.

Even better bargains abound for desktop shoppers. The attractive Compaq Presario 4010f has similar specs (with a 250GB hard drive) and starts at just $309 after a $100 rebate.

Both systems are available on Windows 7 launch day, October 22.

Compaq's aggressively inexpensive hardware -- particularly the $399 laptop -- could have massive ramifications for the computer market. Will netbooks finally feel the pinch that they've been giving to standard laptops for two years now? And what kind of pressure will machines like this bring to bear on more expensive notebook PCs? Price war in 3... 2... 1...
