A Robotic Bed Transform to wheelchair

One of the problems of being paralyzed is the transition from bed to the wheelchair. Sure, this is something that anyone who walks takes for granted, but I’m sure Professor X probably feels pretty helpless every morning.

Okay, I’m starting to slowly drift into the slippery slope of cripple joke territory, and that is just sick. It is a lot better to help out those who cannot walk, like this new device from Panasonic.
As you can see from the picture here, the robotic bed can raise the back, and then a part of the bed comes out to be the wheeled portion. Somehow, these two parts come together to make a wheel chair that is easily accessible for those with limited mobility.
Now here is what I don’t want to see. I had better not see some lazy recluses using this thing because they don’t want to get up in their own house. It’s like those really fat people at the grocery store who ride around on those electric carts when they can just as easily walk. I’ve always wanted to see someone who actually needs one of those electric riding carts show up and beat those fat people up.
But enough of my own dreams. I would hope that everyone’s dream is to have these in their proper places in hospitals.

Netgear unveils Stora NAS

Netgear is a name that is synonymous with quality networking devices and peripherals, where the company has recently unveiled the new NETGEAR Stora – a new, easy-to-use network attached storage (NAS) device that will target home media.

The NETGEAR Stora will allow consumers to centralize photos, music, movies and files easily, allowing them to be used in virtually any compatible device that is connected to the network. The Stora will ship with a smooth user interface to get even non-technical users started right out of the box, where one can easily share their photos and videos with friends and family without having to go through a time-consuming process that involves resizing and uploading photos to various Internet sites, or even transferring them via email. All whom you want and allow to view your files can do so from the Internet, accessible as long as they use the relevant username and password assigned.
The NETGEAR Stora is compatible with Mac, PC and Linux platforms, ensuring it remains the main hive of all your music, movies, photos and files, stored in a single, safe location. Apart from that, its cross-platform file sharing capability allows other users to further expand the collection by sharing their photos, videos and files – as long as it is between home computers and home media players. The NETGEAR Stora is well capable of centralizing music collections and playing them back through iTunes. In addition, it will also integrate content with remote photo frames and social networking sites such as Facebook autoamtically. To further sweeten the deal, the Stora will serve content to other networked devices including Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-enabled photo frames, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, iPhone and Blackberry cellphones.
You can pick up the NETGEAR Stora for $229 a pop, where it comes with a couple of two standard drive bays that automatically mirror data.

Toshiba releases new SSD modules

Toshiba has just announced that they will be unveiling a new series of solid state drive (SSD) modules that will utilize the latest generation Toshiba 32nm MLC NAND flash, where it is also known as the Toshiba SG2 modules. These will come in two types, where one of them is based on the new low-profile mini-SATA (mSATA) interface standard, while the other will comprise of a Half-Slim type that relies on a SATA connector instead. The drives will come in 30GB and 62GB modules (the latter is a rather strange number, don’t you think? One would normally be inclined toward 64GB instead), where volume production of both will commence from October onwards.

These two modules are no larger than a business card, where their small size is able to offer greater design flexibility while saving space and cost in the process when compared to traditional SSDs with hard disk drive form factors and cases. The 62GB module measures a mere one seventh the volume and one eighth the weight of a 2.5″ form factor SSD, while consuming just 50% of its power. Don’t be fooled by the small size when it comes to performance though, as it can boast interface speeds up to 3Gbps, hitting a maximum sequential read speed of 180MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 70MB/s, offering the performance advantages found in SSDs to the notebook platform, portable electronics and embedded systems. The inclusion of an advanced controller will come with a translation mode, where it will enable any drive configuration, while the drive supports 28-bit LBA (Logical Block Address) mode commands and 48-bit LBA mode commands. Other features include support for Multi-word DMA, Ultra-DMA modes and Advanced PIO commands. For those who are paranoid about their stored data, they can always opt to include secure Full Disk Encryption (FDE) backup that prevents unauthorized data access.
There is no word on pricing, but these will be the first (of many) mini-SATA SSDs that will predictably flood the netbook market in the near future.

Blood Pressure Reducing Isometric Exerciser

Fancy having a device that will help boost your blood circulation after feeling lethargic throughout the day with less energy than normal to spare?

The Blood Pressure Reducing Isometric Exerciser might just do the trick, and we don’t think this is a fly-by-night device (pardon the pun) considering it was developed from technology used by the U.S. Air Force to improve F-16 pilots’ blood circulation while they’re busy chasing after bogeys and shooting them down in intense situations.
This device can reduce your blood pressure without medication. University studies correlate the handgrip trainer’s isometric exercise to the calming of the user’s sympathetic nervous system, the reduction of their resting heart rate, and lowering of their blood pressure. Clinical research by cardiovascular specialists shows the device lowers blood pressure in 90% of users who perform the therapy 12 minutes per day, five days a week. Simply hold the device and squeeze as hard as you can; the unit measures your maximum hand strength and calculates a target pressure that is 70% below your threshold. The handgrip then prompts you to maintain the target pressure, indicating when to squeeze harder or loosen your hold with audible tones and visual cues on the LCD. The exercise can be performed while reading or watching television and positive results are measurable in four to eight weeks.
This is a no-brainer of a device to use, which will be powered by one CR123 battery. It will cost you $380 clams to bring one home though – look on the bright side, at least if it works effectively, it will be cheaper than long term medication.

USB Hand Warmers

Gadget mavens Gadget4All knows that winter will be upon us soon – at least those who are residing in the northern hemisphere, and it is always good to remain nice and warm wherever you are.

This has prompted them to release a couple of USB-powered hand warmers that come in the form of a Bear and a Rabbit, cute stuff that might just win the heart of that hot new secretary who just joined your firm. Alternatively, you won’t need to leave these plugged into an available USB port at all times – after all, they can be detached so that they can be worn just like an ordinary (albeit rather cute) hand warmer. Not too sure whether you would want to fork out $22.50 for a pair, since a pair of good gloves to keep your fingers warm and cozy can be found for much cheaper.

Perpetually Rotating Solar Globe

There is nothing quite like a globe to teach your little one some geography as he/she grows up, and here’s a globe that might just be your cup of tea. After all, it is no ordinary globe, being solar powered to keep it perpetually rotating, hence the name Perpetually Rotating Solar Globe.

Developed by a team of physicists, this is the globe that harnesses light and the earth’s magnetic pull to rotate continuously, without cords, batteries, or human intervention. Three photoreceptors inside the globe gather incandescent light or indirect sunlight to power an internal drive. This mechanism interacts with the earth’s magnetic field, providing the torque to spin the globe. The globe is suspended in a clear liquid inside a clear acrylic shell, creating a frictionless environment (much like the earth’s) that enables the globe to rotate steadily and silently at a gentle pace. The acrylic shell can spin 360º in any direction yet the globe itself will always remain upright and in proper alignment. The globe comes with an acrylic stand but it will rotate on most other surfaces, including your hand.
The globe measures 8.5″ in diameter, where it will also show a political map of the world alongside 3,500 place names which include continents, countries, cities and the seven seas. Expect the Perpetually Rotating Solar Globe to retail for $399.95. Steep, yes, but at least you won’t need to buy any batteries…
