Introduction of PlayStation 3

The introduction of Steam to PlayStation 3 has ensured both Sony's console and the PC are "one big happy family," Valve programmer Jeep Barnett (fantastic name) has told PSM3.

Speaking in an interview published in the mag's latest issue - which is on shelves next week - Barnett said cross-platform play between the platforms (see it in action here) gives players the freedom of convenience.

"Some people who have PS3s... I'm not going to say all, but I'm going to say a majority, also play PC," he said. "So the people who play on PC who have a Steam account will be able to play with PS3 friends and PC friends."

Barnett told PSM3 the new relationship between Valve's PC service and PS3, "gives people the freedom to play on the hardware that's not only of their preference, but also their convenience".

"What were two separate universes is now one big happy family," he said.

Currently Valve's digital distribution service is available on PS3 in the form of its development suite, but Barnett says he'd "love" to see full game downloads in the future.

"I'd love to see that," he told PSM3. "Maybe I'm answering these too personally. I think it's a great idea and it's going to become much more common.

"Having downloadable games is another one of those inevitabilities, like it was with the music industry. It's on the way."
